It's Vacation Time!

A vacation just wouldn't be vacation without adding a little Disney in the mix! We just had the best time vacationing with Doug's family in California and Las Vegas. It was a much needed time away from work and the everyday hum-drum. We stuffed so many activities into the time we were gone that we just got to see so much.

My first story is something that I will never forget about our drive to California. We must have been around Beaver when Doug just starts a cussing. I thought he had to of hit an animal in the road or something because he was really worked up. I turned to him and asked him what the heck was the matter. It turns out we had left a pile of clothes home – a pile we were going to pick up and take and put in a bag we had at my mom's house. Well, the pile was every piece of clothing he was taking to California. I couldn't help but just start laughing even though he was so mad. So the first thing we did when we got to California was stop at a Kohl's and buy him an entire wardrobe – 5 days worth of outfits as well as church clothes so we could attend the temple as planned. I don't know what he was so upset about - I would have loved to go on that big of a shopping spree! It was so dang funny.

One of the things everyone was so excited about was going to an Anaheim Angels baseball game. This is the first thing we got to do after the long all-night drive from Utah (so long Doug and I rested while we let the non-licensed Wesley drive for a while!) This was the first time any of us had been to a major league baseball game and we were just awed. The field was groomed so well and it was just the funnest thing.

We are so grateful for Jill's older sister Diane. She lives in Huntington Beach and was so good to arrange so many fun things for us to do. After the ball game we had a hot dog roast at the beach. To say the least we had a blast. From Jill riding the waves in the freezing cold water to watching a beach volleyball tournament we just had a great time.

The next 3 days we were lucky enough to spend at Disneyland! It is true what they say...it is the happiest place on earth! Luckily we weren't there at the peak of the season so we didn't have more than a half hour wait in a line.

Our favorite ride at Disneyland was definitely Indiana Jones. I could have gone on that ride 20 times and still loved it as much as the first time. Also, even though we waited forever for it, Space Mountain was an awesome ride we all liked (as you can see above). Along with Disneyland we went to California Adventure, which we even liked more because of the bigger, higher adrenaline rides. We loved the extremely fast roller coaster, the flying over California airplane simulator ride (it was amazing to even have the smells of what you were flying over!), and the tower of terror.

The last of the three days we were accompanied by Diane, her daughter Betsy, and Betsy's daughter Ruby. It was fun to meet that side of Doug's family and hang out with them a little bit because they live so far away. The picture above with all of us has a funny story to go along with it. You know that nightmare that you all have about being trapped inside It's a Small World and hearing that song over and over and over and over? Well, we lived that nightmare! I think our boat was packed a little too heavy and we got stuck! We were turning a corner near those creepy little puppets and got caught on the side. We seriously sat there for a good 10 minutes before all of the guys decided to work together and push us out. It was just funny because everyone was going crazy with the music...except for Doug's Grandma Higginson and the little baby Ruby, they were loving it!

You can't go to Disneyland without getting a picture with an original Mickey Mouser!

Before one day at Disneyland Doug and I got away for a little alone time. We drove to Long Beach and were able to go to the temple. It was a smaller temple, but it was absolutely beautiful. It's really new...I think it was dedicated in 2005. We were really glad we took the time to drive out there, because it was a really cool experience.

On our way home from California we stopped in Las Vegas for a night at the Stratosphere. We had a great buffet the next morning and then headed up to the top of the hotel. Waiting for us were the scariest rides that I can't believe I went on. Well, I chickened out on one of them that dropped you off the side of the building at 1100 feet in the air. James and Doug were the only ones that could stomach that ride and they were both terrified, you could tell. But I did dare to go with Doug on one that spun you around off the top of the building. However, the scariest ride was one that we all went on (Doug, me, Mackenzie, James, and Wesley) - the tower at the top of the Stratosphere. I am so terrified of heights and I was the most scared I had ever been. And from the picture below you can see we were all horrified. I just love this picture...it captures the feelings of each of us up on top of the world!

And, of course, you can't go to Las Vegas without hitting the Coca Cola and the M&M factory!
